Water, Community, and Opportunity: A Look at March in Mizata
March 11, 2025

March was a month defined by one essential question: what does it mean for a community to truly thrive? For the Mizata Foundation, the answer started with something fundamental — access to safe drinking water.

In partnership with One Atta Time, we distributed and installed 300 water filters across the Mizata community. Each installation was done hand-in-hand with residents, ensuring that families not only received the equipment but understood how to use and maintain it for years to come. Behind this effort was Bessy Martinez, Community Coordinator for the Mizata Foundation, whose dedication made the entire initiative possible.

Water access, however, is not a problem solved overnight. That is why March also brought an important focus on WASH: Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, as we welcomed Agua Viva and other water-focused organizations to Mizata to assess the community's current situation. These visits are part of a longer effort to identify sustainable, long-term solutions. Our goal remains ambitious and non-negotiable: every person in Mizata should have access to safe, reliable drinking water. We are actively pursuing partnerships with organizations such as Rotary Club to scale this work. If you would like to be part of this journey, reach out at amalie@mizatafoundation.com.

Beyond water, March reminded us that empowerment takes many forms. Through our local initiatives, community members are creating handmade products: postcards from our art program, bracelets and purses from our women's program, shampoo products supporting women-led businesses, and organic soaps and lip balms made in partnership with the dog sanctuary. Every purchase directly supports livelihoods and skill-building within the community. Products are available in person at the English Academy or by contacting amalie@mizatafoundation.com.

As the month drew to a close, our attention turned to children in the neighboring community of Texicio. In partnership with Jess Rans — who will be visiting Mizata with a retreat in early April, we launched an Easter fundraiser to provide sports uniforms for local kids. Access to sport is about more than play. It builds confidence, teamwork, and a sense of belonging.

March showed us, once again, what becomes possible when community, collaboration, and shared purpose come together. From clean water to women's empowerment to youth sports, every step forward is a step toward a stronger, more resilient Mizata. None of it happens without the partners, volunteers, and supporters who believe in this vision.

We are just getting started.
